Art as a path of introspection
Dzintars Kalniņš combines introspective spirituality and visual expression in his work. He believes that art is a tool with which it is possible to understand and accept the duality of human nature - the light and the dark side (light and shadow).
“Only by allowing the light to enter within can we truly see our shadows. And only by accepting our shadows do we gain the freedom to be whole.”
This belief is expressed in his works as a symbolic balance – sometimes disturbing, sometimes comforting. He does not paint from the foreground, but allows the work to reveal itself. Dzintars believes that ideas come from the subconscious and his task is to be a mediator, allowing images and symbols to express themselves.
How are the works made?
Dzintars works intuitively. He starts with an impulse, a feeling that materializes on the canvas without a predetermined result. The titles he gives to his works are not simply defined illustrations – they are leitmotifs that help the viewer see the broader context of the work.
The paintings “All in One Boat”, “Water Frequencies”, “Setting the Direction” or “Milky Way Kisses” are examples where the depicted visual layer reveals not only form, but also essence – collective experience, the fluctuations of consciousness, moments of choice and the cosmic nature of love.
